Worried about the FTC going after your blog?: “

One of the big discussions both here at Blogworld Expo and in the blogosphere in general is the implication of the new Federal Trade Commission’s new regulations for online advertising practices from the Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The regulations seem to address the issue of disclosure: if I give you a copy of my book and you write about it, you have to let your readers know that. If I buy you dinner and then you write about my book or reference my site, you have to disclose that. And so on, and so on.

Problem is, this FTC guideline has gotten more and more onerous in the echo chamber of the blogosphere, and bloggers are getting a bit paranoid about the implications.

Luckily, it appears that this paranoia is misplaced, so you can all take a deep breath. Earlier this week – Oct 14th, 2009 – Mary Engle, associate director for advertising practices at the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, had a conference call with reporters to clarify the situation and here’s what she said:

‘We’re not going to be patrolling the blogosphere, we are not planning on investigating individual bloggers.’

Engle emphasized that what they’ve released are new guidelines. ‘They aren’t rules and regulations, and they don’t have the force of law. They are guidelines intended to help advertisers comply with Section 5 of the FTC Act [PDF]‘ which focuses on unfair or deceptive practices.

So it’s not the rebirth of the Blog Police as the Disclosure Police, as I tweeted earlier while listening to a panel on this subject here at Blogworld, but it is nonetheless a reminder that you should still be transparent anyway. If a vendor pays $200 to write about their product, don’t run away in terror, just let your readers know.

And that’s what this brouhaha is all about anyway: just be transparent and disclose what’s going on, and you’ll be in the clear from both the FTC and ethically on the right side of things too.

For many bloggers it seems difficult to blog regularly whereas other bloggers find it easy to blog everyday.

For your blogging to be effective, you will need to add fresh content to your blog on a regular basis. Read the following five tips that you can use to make blogging easy.

1. Prepare your blog content in advance and save it so that it’s ready to be postedeveryday.

When you have time to write, write enough blog content that will be sufficient for several days or a whole week. Think about any information relating to your niche which your website visitors could be interested in seeing on your blog. Identify the sub-niches in your niche and write about those as well. So you never should run out of ideas on what to blog about.

3. Interact with your blog visitors by inviting them to leave some comments relating to your posts and your niche.

This is an easy way of getting unique content on your website without writing it yourself. The more interaction you allow on your blog, the more content you will get on your blog. The more traffic you will generate.

4. Find out about the core problems and issues that people in your niche are interested in, and provide information that addresses those questions on your blog.

Look in the relevant forums for the hot topics that people are asking, and provide answers to these questions on your blog. This will make your blog useful to your visitors because it will have information which your visitors are looking for and it gives you a wide range of topics that you can blog about.

5. Use PLR content, customize it, make it unique and break it into blog posts.

It is crucial that you make the PLR content unique otherwise you can be penalized for duplicate content. Google doesn´t like duplicate content. Using PLR content as a starting point for your blog posts means that you will be easily and quickly able to generate fresh blog
content.
